The Final Curtain…?

Yours truly is closing this blog for an indefinite amount of time. It has become too much of an obligation and even a bi-weekly post is a time-consuming affair. Recently a non-backed-up harddisk crash forced me to say goodbye to quite a number of digitized albums and accompanying textfiles. Ready to be posted. I think this turned the scale.

It seems a good idea to make this blog extinct. I'll perform a regular check on the old posts and whenever a file is deleted by the hoster due to the 30-days-no-download rule, I'll kill the post here. When there's only one left I'll decide: 'goodbye' or 'hello again'

P.S. thanks for all the nice comments over the last ten months! (and the complaints about bitrate... ;-)

Pebbles Volume 3 - The Acid Gallery

Flabbergasted, that's how I felt back in 1982 after the first spin of this record which a friend had just picked up from a second-hand store. Just getting into The 13th Floor Elevators and Nuggets stuff, this collection blew everything to pieces. I just couldn't believe that this music, these songs could really exist. Like some space/time anomaly had caused a piece of vinyl to slip in from a parallel universe. (No, I wasn't on drugs…) Seperate stories could be told about each unique song on this legendary compilation. From the utmost ridiculous ('Like A Dribbling Fram' by The Race Marbles) through the demented ('The Reality of Air Fried Borsk' by The Driving Stupid) to haunting psychedelic rock ('Suicidal Flowers' by Chrystal Chandlier which can only be desribed as the best song The Doors never recorded…)
But, cutting short, as an amazing testimonial of the wild effects of psychedelic drugs on the mid-sixties teenage suburban population, no record will ever beat this one. Believe me.

Now that Pictures of Matchstickmen has turned up as soundtrack for several TV-commercials lately, it's time to shine a light on the glorious album it's culled from. Conceived in the heyday of the British Psychedelic Era and absolutely among the best in it's genre. A trademark sound with that laserbeam lead guitar, nasal vocals, the occasional tape-flange effect and last but not least: superb melodies. All songs have that undefinable non pre-fab 60's bubblegum edge. Instantly recognizable and pure pop magic!

Heartbreaks. That's what this compilation is all about. The purpose is clear. Spotlight on the fragile side of local teen garagery. The guys with the glasses, so easily overlooked by the girls. Nineteen songs -and some real gems!- , straight from the heart by the ones who hardly stood a chance.
